Beginning in October 1941 the Gestapo used the basement of the former Wholesale Market Hall (Grossmarkthalle) as an assembly point for the deportation of the Jews of Frankfurt and the surrounding
area. More than 10,000 Jewish men, women, and children were robbed of their last possessions and
deported on mass transports to ghettos, concentration camps, and extermination camps. The Memorial at the Frankfurt Grossmarkthalle remembers this crime and thus the historical significance of the site, which today is the new headquarters of the European Central Bank. In this publication, architects Marcus Kaiser and Tobias Katz elucidate their artistic concept, which is presented with a photographic documentation by Norbert Miguletz. There are also articles honoring the people whose testimony has been permanently inscribed at the memorial site. Rounding out this volume are a commentary, recent research on the history of the deportations from Frankfurt, an analysis of one perpetrator’s profile, and a critical review of the memory politics of the city of Frankfurt.
