Event location: Jewish Museum Frankfurt, Bertha-Pappenheim-Platz 1, 60311 Frankfurt am Main
At the beginning of the exhibition “In the Face of Death”, we are giving the floor to Israeli artist Ruth Patir (*1984), who is presenting two video installations in the exhibition: “Forest between Worlds” (2021, in collaboration with Zoe Polanski) and “My Father in the Cloud” (2022).
Ruth Patir is currently exhibiting in the Israeli pavilion at the 60th Venice Art Biennale, which runs until November 24. However, her work “(M)otherland” is not accessible there. For her, art is a platform for social issues. Her exhibition will therefore only be shown once “a ceasefire and the release of all hostages has been achieved” in the aftermath of October 7.
Her video installation “My Father in the Cloud” deals with a new phenomenon: losing someone in an era in which their digital presence persists beyond death. Patir uses digital techniques to open up new perspectives and horizons and experiments with the possibilities of resurrection or living on after the death of her father - the creation of an avatar. “I could dance with him again”, she says in the film, and so she simulates his presence, examines the possibility of creating new memories of him and allows viewers to participate in this process.
Ruth Patir talks to Sara Soussan, curator for contemporary Jewish cultures, about her artistic work and the presentation of her video installations in the temporary exhibition. The conversation will be held in English.
The talk is part of the accompanying program of the exhibition “In the Face of Death”.
