The Female Side of God

Art and Ritual

The Female Side of God. Art and Ritual exhibition catalogue describes and explores the visual aspects of the diverse representations of the female side of God. In addition to five essays by renowned scholars in their fields, the catalogue offers a detailed insight into the contemporary art works in the exhibition. This highly topical volume brings together interdisciplinary perspectives on a controversial subject.

The Jewish Museum Frankfurt’s exhibition The Female Side of God traces a cultural historical trajectory from female deities in the Ancient Near East, the female aspects in the notions of God and currents of mysticism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam to religious practices and contemporary issues. For the first time, it presents the relationships between archaeological finds, ceremonial objects, religious writings, and visual art works from the Renaissance to the present day in the nexus of aesthetics and the history of ideas.
